Medical and Scientific Illustrator

What is it?

On Medical and Scientific Illustration
Medical and scientific illustration is an interdisciplinary field where complex biological and anatomical information is made visually understandable.
These illustrations are not merely aesthetic productions; they are a means of communication that aim to convey information accurately, reliably, and effectively.
Each work combines the expressive power of art with the precision of science.

Process / Workflow
Scientific and medical illustration is not only an aesthetic production; it is also a process of conveying information that is accurate, clear, and reliable. Every project is meticulously planned in terms of both visuals and content and progresses step by step.
1. Meeting and Definition
In the first stage, a preliminary meeting is held with the project owner. In this meeting, the subject, target audience, and the media to be used are determined. The purpose, scope, and visual language of the requested visualization are clarified. Expectations and technical details are discussed based on reference images.

2. Research and Analysis
Scientific sources related to the subject are examined to determine how the correct anatomical or biological structures will be expressed visually. This stage ensures both the academic accuracy and visual consistency of the illustration.

3. Design Sketch
In line with the information obtained, the first sketch is prepared. This drawing is the stage where the general composition and the language of expression are presented. The sketch is submitted to the project owner for evaluation and feedback.

4. Evaluation and Revision
The pros and cons of the sketch are discussed together with the project owner. Necessary adjustments are made in terms of composition, scale, detail, and emphasis. At the end of this collaborative process, the sketch takes its final form.

5. Coloring and Final Approval
In the final stage, the coloring process of the illustration begins. By balancing light, texture, and tone, the final visual is completed. After the necessary final revisions, the project is delivered.

Copyright and Usage Rights
Scientific and medical illustrations are original works produced at the intersection of art and science. Each illustration is considered a “work” under Law No. 5846 on Intellectual and Artistic Works and is protected by copyright.
Copyright belongs to the artist who creates the work. However, within the scope of the project, a license to use (usage rights) or a transfer of copyright may be granted under certain conditions.
A usage license allows the illustration to be used only in the specified media, for the specified purposes and durations. A transfer of copyright means that all legal rights to the work are permanently transferred to the project owner.
Since there is a difference in ownership and responsibility between these two situations, pricing also varies accordingly.
Usage license: When a usage license is granted, the artist remains the copyright holder and the price is determined according to the standard project fee.
Full transfer of copyright: If the copyright is completely transferred, all legal rights of the work pass to the other party; therefore, the price may increase depending on the scope of the transfer (duration, media, distribution, commercial use, etc.).
Unauthorized reproduction, sharing, re-editing, or commercial use of the works is protected by law. This protection safeguards both the artist’s creative labor and the scientific accuracy of the work.
In all projects, copyright and usage rights are mutually determined before the work begins. In this way, a transparent, ethical, and sustainable working process is ensured for both the artist and the project owner.
